Why African ancestry matters in tauopathy research
Most conversations about Alzheimer's disease and related tauopathies still lean on datasets that barely reflect human genetic diversity. That is not a footnote; it is a structural blind spot.
The gap is the finding
When we study tau pathology almost exclusively in populations of European ancestry, we risk mistaking population-specific patterns for universal biology. African ancestry carries distinct genetic architecture — and distinct environmental and health-system contexts that interact with disease trajectories.
What we are building
At Sussex and through collaborations in Nigeria, our work asks a simple question with hard implications: what changes when we centre under-represented ancestries in iPSC and post-mortem studies?
The answer is not only scientific. It affects trial design, biomarker validation, and who benefits first from the next generation of therapies.
A glimpse forward
Science communication across Africa is part of the same mission. Capacity building — BioRTC, training pipelines, open methods — turns representation from a statistic into a sustained practice.
